Professor of Philosophy with Leadership of the UGA Ethics Hub
The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar with national and/or international visibility in ethics, a well-developed and active program of research, evidence of instructional excellence, experience in public outreach, and demonstrated capacity for academic leadership, preferably including grantsmanship, philanthropic fundraising, and alumni engagement.
This position includes leadership of the UGA Ethics Hub, a campus-wide initiative housed in the Department of Philosophy and serving the entire University of Georgia. The Ethics Hub advances undergraduate and graduate education, interdisciplinary research, and public engagement in practical ethics and ethical reasoning across disciplines as part of a new General Education requirement, effective Fall 2027.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position are to carry out research; teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Philosophy and the successful candidate’s area of scholarly expertise; supervise graduate and undergraduate research; and perform service to the department, college, and university. In addition, in leading the UGA Ethics Hub, the successful candidate will provide strategic and intellectual leadership for a multidisciplinary ethics initiative.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing leadership for campus-wide efforts in ethical reasoning and practical ethics, supporting faculty engagement and collaboration across colleges and schools
- Supporting curricular development and instructional excellence in ethics-related courses across disciplines to help meet the new general education requirement focusing on ethical reasoning
- Promoting strong course design and evaluation practices in ethical reasoning
- Advancing opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student training in practical ethics, including mentorship and professional development
- Fostering interdisciplinary research and scholarly collaboration in practical ethics and related areas
- Enhancing the visibility and impact of ethics-related scholarship at UGA
- Developing public-facing programming and partnerships that advance ethical discourse beyond the university, including by securing external support through philanthropy, grants, and private sector engagement.
Qualifications
- PhD in Philosophy or a closely related field
- Record of scholarly achievement appropriate for appointment at the advanced Associate or Full Professor level
- Demonstrated expertise in ethics or practical ethics
- Evidence of effective undergraduate and/or graduate teaching and mentoring
- Demonstrated leadership experience relevant to directing academic programs or interdisciplinary initiatives
- Demonstrated success building interdisciplinary collaborations or initiatives
- Strong record of research productivity and scholarly impact in applied ethics
- Strong record of supporting or developing ethics-related curricula or pedagogy across disciplines
- Strong record of public scholarship or external partnerships related to applied and practical ethics
- Evidence of philanthropic engagement, grantsmanship, and familiarity with development and alumni relations
