Postdoctoral Scholar in Bioethics

The Department of Bioethics and the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) are pleased to invite applications from creative, highly qualified, and motivated scholars for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in Bioethics.

The Department of Bioethics in the School of Medicine at CWRU is a hub of interdisciplinary innovation in Bioethics and medical humanities research, teaching, and service. The Inamori Center is a University-wide Center offering ethics programming and collaboration across the university. This postdoctoral scholar position is intended to support an individual whose work integrates and academically enriches both programs and beyond. It is anticipated that this postdoc will be teaching in the Department of Bioethics and working with programming in the Inamori Center, as they also attend to their own research. Opportunities for research collaborations are also available.

The Scholar will:

●       Teach undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in bioethics and a related area. Priority areas include research ethics, neuroethics, and public health ethics, though other areas will be considered; 

●       Mentor and collaborate with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students;

●       Interface with Global Ethical Leadership Students and Bioethics and Medical Humanities student groups;

●       Offer lectures and workshops on topics involving ethics;

●       Develop a training plan and meet regularly with faculty advisor;

●       Actively pursue funding for individual and collaborative scholarship and research pursuits to develop future career;

●       Become fluent in the mission and offerings of the Inamori Center;

●       Contribute to Inamori Center initiatives by representing the Inamori Center at campus and partner meetings and assisting with other duties as assigned. 

This is a one-year position, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, conditional on the availability of funding and performance. The Scholar is expected to be in residence and to maintain a full-time schedule and on-campus presence. The position offers a competitive salary, vacation and sick time, and medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. The stipend for the position will be commensurate with the National Research Service Awards (NRSA) levels. We also provide a research allowance of up to $2,000 for approved expenses directly related to work, such as travel, books, and research.

 The term of the position will commence August 1, 2026.

Qualifications

 

●       Specialization in Bioethics and fluency with other ethics fields.

●       We are particularly interested in a Scholar whose research explores issues related to current developments in Bioethics and Medical Humanities as related to other areas of inquiry, such as (but not limited to) biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence and health, health equity, health policy, and public health.

●       At the time of appointment, candidates must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Bioethics or a related field with a specialization in Bioethics. Candidates should not have earned the terminal degree before 2021.

In compliance with the City of Cleveland’s Pay Transparency Ordinance (effective October 27, 2025), the annual starting base salary range for this position is $63,480-$63,900. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer. Postdocs receive individual and family healthcare benefits, life insurance, and employee assistance.
