Ethical Reasoning in Action aims to:
• Elevate the campus-wide understanding and discourse on ethical reasoning as a teachable, evaluative process to apply to personal, professional and civic issues.
• Provide a unifying strategy that brings together efforts to develop ethical reasoning curriculum and assessment.
• Encourage multiple avenues of intentional connections among personal, professional and civic applications of ethical reasoning skills in the classroom, co-curricular activities and university life.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Ethical Reasoning in Action is expanding our vision of how we put our strategy for ethical decision making out into the world. We are seeking an associate director who will play a critical role in broadening the empirical base of Ethical Reasoning in Action by initiating new lines of research. The primary responsibilities of the associate director are to lead research efforts to assess and maximize the effectiveness of the 8KQ strategy. In addition, the associate director will assist programs in implementing ethical reasoning instruction, assist in providing workshops in 8KQ ethical reasoning both on and off campus, and assist in other duties as assigned.
 
The associate director will hold a full-time, 12-month Administrative and Professional faculty position (not tenure or promotion eligible) with Ethical Reasoning in Action and be affiliated with an academic unit within the College of Health and Behavioral Studies or the college that best represents their field of study. They will be expected to teach one course per semester related to ethical reasoning in their field and to maintain active scholarship appropriate to the assignment as associate director and to the nature of the ethical reasoning program.
 
The department is interested in candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence by providing leadership toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
 
Qualifications:
 
The required qualifications are:
• A professional commitment to and ability to instruct JMU’s distinctive Eight Key Questions ethical reasoning strategy;
• An earned doctorate, scholarly credentials and teaching experience appropriate for an appointment as associate or full professor with training in social sciences, health sciences, decision sciences or a related field;
• A demonstrated interest and significant scholarly activity in moral psychology and/or social science related to decision making, ethical reasoning or areas directly relevant to JMU’s 8KQ approach;
• Prior experience in an administrative role;
• A demonstrated ability to build positive professional relationships and communicate with individuals across many different units and programs and off campus as well.
 
Preferred qualifications include:
• Experience applying for, and being awarded, grant funding for research related to decision making, morality or a related field.
