APPE Member Spotlight

Name: Jeff DunnTitle/Institution: Phyllis W. Nicholas Director, The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics, DePauw University
APPE member since: 2022

The Prindle Institute for Ethics will be hosting its third annual Midwest Ethics Symposium next month. Tell us about it and how people can participate.
The Midwest Ethics Symposium is an annual conference we host at the Institute, which aims to bring together students, academics, professionals, and community members to discuss a particular topic in ethics. Past themes have included the ethics of philanthropy and the ethics of AI. This year we're excited for the symposium to focus on ethics and sports. It will be April 9-10, 2025 at the Prindle Institute and is free and open to the public. More information here.

You also host a number of events at your building, which is located in a nature park, several times a year. Tell us about the space and why it's such a great place to promote ethics education.
We're really fortunate to have a beautiful space that was designed specifically for ethics education. As you note, we're on the edge of a 500-acre park, which is just off the main DePauw campus. It's a space that takes you out of the regular bustle of the day and really encourages reflection and discussion about ethics and values. It was the first LEED Gold certified building in Indiana (a certification related to environmental sustainability) and a winner of the AIA Indiana Design Award and the AIA San Antonio Design Award. You can see the space here.

The Prindle Institute is the institutional home of APPE. How do you hope that partnership can expand over the next few years?
We've experimented with some programming at the Prindle Institute in collaboration with some of the APPE affinity groups. I think there is a lot of opportunity there, especially outside the regular APPE conference cycle. APPE has also done great work building a network of ethics centers across the country, and I'd like to see us work together to develop those relationships in even more meaningful ways so we can share ideas and grow together. Finally, I think we can build off the strength of ethics bowl and partner to bring the ethics bowl approach to new audiences, including professional audiences.

What's on the horizon for 2025? What are you looking forward to, personally or professionally?
Well, I already mentioned the Midwest Ethics Symposium, which we're looking forward to in early April. And then the summer always brings a number of different visitors to the Institute to participate in multi-day events related to ethics. This summer we'll have high school teachers, college professors, university administrators, elementary students, undergraduates, and (of course!) ethics bowl case writers. I'm looking forward to having some good discussions with these different groups and also (hopefully!) going for some walks in the nature park.

Ethic Bowl Cases to Consider

2025 National Competition Case Set, APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl®

In the final of this year's competition, the students discussed the following questions:

  • If you were tasked with outlining the United States’ policy with respect to the use of space weaponry, what would that policy look like? Case: Begun, the Star Wars Have
  • If you were tasked with producing a policy regarding the term lengths for federal judges (up to and including lifetime appointments), what would that policy look like? Case: Unfit to Sit

Read the cases here (#2, #15).
