APPE Member Spotlight

Name: Sally Moore, MPA
Title, Organization: PhD Student, The Ohio State University's Educational Studies Department
APPE member since: 2021

Tell us about how you got involved in APPE.
My first interaction with APPE was when I was on my university's Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) team as an undergrad. While I did not know much about APPE then, I was already reaping the benefits! After graduating, I served as the Director of Undergraduate Programming at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Parr Center for Ethics. I learned about APPE and its excellent opportunities through my work with the Parr Center. In 2021, I joined the APPE Program Committee and attended that year's APPE Conference. I had a blast! Last year, I continued working with APPE on the Membership Committee, which I am still a part of today. I've even published a paper in Teaching Ethics, a fantastic journal regularly advertised by APPE. It is safe to say that APPE has provided me with countless opportunities and many wonderful colleagues through the years.

You've volunteered on a few APPE committees. In what ways do general members serving on committees help the organization?
Yep, general members can serve on APPE committees - and I implore everyone to do so! As a general member of the Membership Committee, I share my perspective on APPE and its many initiatives. This opportunity allows Board Members to try out ideas and receive timely feedback. My views and perspectives do not represent all APPE members, so please consider joining a committee this next year! 🙂You're a new (ish) PhD student. What are you researching?
I am in The Ohio State University's Educational Studies Department, specializing in Philosophy and History of Education. I research undergraduate ethics education and the role of ethics centers at higher education institutions. If you work closely with an ethics center, please get in touch with me! I would love to hear about your experience.

Will we see you in Cincinnati at the annual conference? If so, what are you most looking forward to?
I am excited to see everyone in Cincinnati for this year's annual APPE conference! I am excited about presenting my latest work, "The Commercial Value of Higher Education," where I will compare university marketing strategies to their mission statements and daily operations. I am also jazzed to volunteer with the APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl® Competition!

What are some of your goals for 2024?
Some of my professional goals for 2024 include connecting with ethics center directors and conducting a research project I piloted last year, where I explore how the organizational placement of an ethics center affects its ability to fulfill its mission. I also aim to continue my work with Ohio State's Center for Ethics and Human Values, seeing where I can provide more support and connect with undergraduate students. Finally, I would like to get more connected with IEB, whether volunteering as a judge at more events or helping write cases. A personal goal of mine is to continue improving my hand-building skills in ceramics!

Ethics Bowl Case to Consider

Quitting the Classroom (APPE IEB® National Competition Case Set, 2024)

Few resources. Large class sizes. Unruly behavior. Low pay. Throw in a pandemic, and it created the perfect storm for thousands of K-12 educators.

"It’s a tough time to be a teacher. Here in the post-pandemic world, K-12 instructors are faced with the overwhelming task of filling the academic and social-emotional gaps magnified by the COVID-19 crisis. In response, teachers are leaving the profession in droves," starts this case from the 28th APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl® National Championship.

As with nearly everything, the pandemic exacerbated many of the issues that are leading to teacher burnout. And, the solutions remain complex. In the meantime, though, students are falling behind and at risk of becoming a "lost generation."

Read the full case here (#10), then discuss the effects of the teacher shortage, how we might be able to fix the problem(s), and the impact teachers' professional duties and responsibilites have on their mental health and quality of life.
