Seeking Your Suggestions for an APPE Reading Group
We are re-imagining the Ethically Curious Book Club. Please help us select books, chapters, articles, or other readings for APPE's "Great Reads in Ethics" reading group. We hope these regular reading and discussion meetings will vary by topic and in audience (and length of reading). For example, some might be for a general audience, and some may be more useful to people teaching in a specific area of ethics. We are interested in exploring different formats and methods as we continue to offer a variety of member benefits.
Past books have included:- Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, by Robin Wall Kimmerer
- Klara and the Sun, by Kazuo Ishiguro
- Is the Algorithm Plotting Against Us?: A Layperson's Guide to the Concepts, Math, and Pitfalls of AI, by Kenneth Wenger
- How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question, by Michael Schur

Complete the Ethics Center Directors Survey
APPE is conducting a survey among Ethics Center Director consortium members to help us learn more about the important work being done at Ethics Centers, your interests in how our collective group of directors can be helpful to each other, and how to better structure our Summits themselves. Hopefully, this information will allow us to develop a more robust network and provide some resources (including information about salary, responsibilities, and role which you might be able to use in negotiating for salary increases or changes in your workload).
We will present the results of the survey at the upcoming 2025 Ethics Center Directors’ Summit at the APPE Conference on Feb. 20. All information will be aggregated (individual responses will remain confidential). The survey contains questions across four categories of demographics, professional duties, strategic initiatives, and goals for the Ethics Center Directors group. We anticipate that the survey will take no more than than 10 minutes, and greatly appreciate your response to learn more about our community. |

APPE Member Benefit Spotlight: Teaching Ethics APPE members have access to current and archived issues of Teaching Ethics, thanks to a partnership with The Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum (SEAC). Members might be especially interested in the newest issues, which were guest edited by and feature APPE members. To view online content, you'll need to log in and access a link in the APPE Info Hub under the "Resources" tab.
The Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum (SEAC) was organized in 1999 to stimulate scholarship on ethics and the teaching of ethics in all academic disciplines and to afford an opportunity for the exchange of research. The Society sponsors the journal Teaching Ethics, organizes professional conferences, and provides resources for ethics instruction across the curriculum. |

Ethics Issue to Consider I've Just Seen A Face, 2024 Regional Case Set, Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl If you're traveling for the holidays you may soon find yourself faced with new technology being rolled out at airports across the U.S. As a case in this year's regional case set begins:
"Instead of showing your ID to an employee in the security line, you may find that you’re asked to insert it into a machine while a camera captures your image. The machine software will then determine whether that image matches the person on your ID. Some airports use databases for identification so that the ID does not even need to be scanned."
On first glance, perhaps it appears this is an improvement to the slow-moving security line. But as the cases so often do, it also lays out concerns about this technology and who has access to the data.
Read the case here (#2) and then discuss it with your traveling partners this holiday season. |
